Winter warmers.

Posted on

Some light snow on the mountains during the previous cold spell we had.

We’ve had 2 beautiful, mild, spring-like days, but the wind is starting to blow seriously now, and I’m sure the promised cold front is on its way. The possibility of 2 or 3 very cold days does not faze me, I love the cold weather!

Along with the cold weather, I also love food that most people consider perfect for cold weather – hearty stews and  heavy, veggie- and-meat laden soups! Even thinking about cold wind howling outside, a huge pot of stew on the stove, and a warm, comfy lounge and some blankets for extra cosiness, makes my heart warm… Throw in some knitting and a soppy TV show/movie, and you’ve got perfection!

I also love winter clothes. Jackets. Boots. Scarves. Hand knitted sweaters and cardigans. Crochet afghans. It is ironic that I live in a country where winter is only 3 months long, and also very mild, compared to most other countries.

I know most people hate winter. I cannot quite understand that, as it really is an essential part of the cycles of life and nature, so rather than hating it, why not make it easier on yourself and embrace it? There are just soooooo many ways in which you can make yourself comfortable in the cold. And after all, you can pile on the clothes to make yourself warm, but in the heat, even if you strip down to bare essentials, it doesn’t help to cool down – not where we are, anyway!

Like comedian Billy Connolly says – ‘There is no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes!’ 😀

I have yet to decide what we’re having for dinner tonight, but I do know that if the cold front is in full swing by tomorrow, as promised, dinner will be something warm and filling and comforting…

(I wonder if psychologists have figured out people’s personalities by the season they prefer yet?)

Until next time, stay safe! 🙂

About zelmare

Hallo to you from the southern most part of the African continent - South Africa!! To put my life in a nutshell : I raised 3 absolutely fabulous kids (I'm sure you will hear a lot about them, since I am a very proud mama), I became a doting grandmother two years ago and recently bought a house in the Western Cape, and in doing so, realized a dream I've had for many, many years. I love traveling, which I don't do often enough. I love living a simple life - cooking, gardening, knitting and of course, blogging. There is still a lot I want to do and see in my lifetime, but time will tell how much of that I can actually accomplish. I am looking forward to meeting a lot of lovely new friends and interesting people here on WordPress! :)

  1. Really good post, Zelmare! Great mountain photo too! We, in Scotland have winters that are way too long, and not a lot to say about most of the summer either, although many of my photos would give you the wrong impression! That is why most Brits escape to warmer climes for our holidays! Temperatures range from around -10 for a very few days in winter to a couple of 30+ days in summer! Mostly, it is cloudy and wet, so t-shirt and shorts days are not that often! Can’t complain though because I live in a beautiful country! I concur with all of your winter day indulgences, and enjoy them even more when I have been out in the cold and wet for a while and come into a warm house and a plate of thick, hot soup!

    • Thank you John! To visit Scotland is a long standing dream of mine, maybe I’ll still get to go there some day. I can imagine that with very long winters, one can have enough of the cold and wet (everybody tells me that, so I have to believe them!) Well, I’m all rigged to do a lovely pot of soup tomorrow, so hopefully the weather will play along. 🙂

  2. Mooi fotos!! 😍 every season has good and bad…. in SA winter was my favourite… in Canada, summer is… go figure! Split personality?
