Honey… I’m ho-ome!

Posted on

Been there, done that, did not get the t-shirt. πŸ™‚

My last post was all about my excitement over my impending visit to my daughter in Canada. Well, I’ve been, and I’m back!

The three weeks flew by, and as I got ready to head home, it felt unrealΒ that my holiday could be over already…

(Why does one always feel torn? Or is it just me? What I mean is – before I left, I was torn because I was going on holiday without my SO*, and after 3 weeks in Canada, I was torn again, this time because I would have loved staying longer to spend more time with my daughter and son-in-law, but I was missing my SO so much, I had to come home… 😦

Anyway…about my trip…

I LOVED IT! πŸ™‚Β  I’ve wanted to see Canada for many years, and now I’ve done it. And may I say, what a beautiful country it is! Of course I haven’t seen the WHOLE country, that would probably ( πŸ˜‰ ) take more than 3 weeks, but what I’ve seen has left me happy and content, because it was all that I expected, and more!

At the top of Sulphur Ridge.

Besides enjoying being with Xan and Stef, and getting to know the area where they live, as well as the city of Edmonton, they spoiled me beyond any expectations, and for that I thank them from the bottom of my heart. They took time off work and drove me around all over the place! I got to go to Drumheller and see the amazing countryside around it, I was fortunate to visit the absolutely fantastic Royal Tyrrell Museum ( dinosaurs) which is well worth a visit, even if you may think you are not really into dinosaurs. And… I got to see and experience The Canadian Rockies!

Oh. My. Word.

Beyond beautiful. The beauty of it often left me speechless, and definitely in awe of the power and wonder of nature. I could go there again, and again, and again, and I will not tire of the awesome beauty. I was fortunate enough to experience these magnificent mountains from a tourist’s perspective, as well as on a more ‘personal’, intimate level, as we drove around and stopped at numerous sites, and walked and climbed to a point where I thought I was not going to make it. But I did (with a little help and encouragement from Xan & Stef!), and I’m glad I persevered. The rewards were such that I hope if I forget everything else in my old age, I will remember that.

So, thanks to my SO, my daughter and Stef, I can tick another couple of boxes on my Bucket List: Canadian Rockies – CHECK. Banff – CHECK. Jasper – CHECK.

I will not ‘check’ Canada just yet, as it is such a vast country, and I feel I need to see a bit more of it before I can say I’ve seen Canada!

(Next time, I might write a bit about the things I found odd about Canada…)

Mellow Yellow

On Wednesday and Thursday, I took my new camera with to the farm in the late afternoon, to see if I could get an opportunity to take some pictures. I’ve been ‘playing’ with the camera to familiarize myself with it, and I’ve also tried to take a few serious pictures. Not a single one came out ‘wow! I have to share this!’, but I’m going to share a few in a series anyway, because I need the feedback.

On my drive around the farm, I saw this pretty tree. At first nothing amazing, just a tree with a pretty shape. When I got closer, though, I noticed that this tree was covered in the most beautiful yellow flowers! It was a happy tree, so I thought I’d try and capture some of it’s beauty.

Just so you know – my main aim was to play with focus. I was trying to get the bits I wanted to photograph in focus, and not the bits around it. It didn’t work all the time, but some came out OK. (I was trying manual focus.) The other thing was that the flowers were quite high up the tree, so I had to aim upwards all the time. Not an excuse, I know! πŸ™‚ Once I’m more comfortable with the camera I’m sure this will be a breeze! Talking of breezes, there was quite a strong breeze blowing, so I needed to get my timing right as well.

So, here goes!

Nothing much at first sight, I know!

Some of the first flower attempts.

A bit closer.

A pretty leaf cluster that caught my eye.

More fresh leaves and some berries (unopened flowers?)

While standing there trying to capture some flower pics, I heard a buzzing, and realized that there were hundreds of bees flying around. They were going crazy trying to sip at all the flowers, and it seemed that they were racing to see who could get to the most flowers in the shortest time. I’ve seen some of your amazing bee photos, and I tried to just catch one in a picture. I don’t have to tell you that it’s not easy! πŸ™‚ I have quite a few bee pictures – all out of focus! With the second to last attempt, I managed to get the bee more or less in focus, but the rest…well, not so much! πŸ™‚

Bees feasting.

Oi vey! I have a lot to learn yet! But, that’s fine by me, it’s a fun journey. πŸ™‚

After Wednesday’s adventure with the cow mama, I am feeling a lot better today. Thanks to all for your concern, I really appreciate it!

And that’s another week gone! Happy Friday to you, and enjoy the weekend! πŸ™‚

Autumn in South Africa

Posted on

The weather has been unseasonably warm for this time of the year, but nature has not been waiting for the temperatures to drop. The signs of autumn are everywhere, and apparently it is going to become colder towards the end of the week. I stepped out of our front door, and took a few pictures with some evidence of autumn right here in our yard.

Leaves on the paving

This next picture is nothing special, but I do like how the leaves just about cover the grass, and the sun shining through the trees onto the lawn.

Leaves that have fallen on leaves! πŸ™‚

Green, yellow and brown leaves, all in one tree!

Big leaves, and small leaves

Rocks and leaves.

As with the seasons in nature, there is also something beautiful in every season of life. I don’t know when it is generally accepted for a person to be ‘in the autumn of his/her life’, but if I’m already there, then I can vouch for the fact that there is beauty in this phase of life.

Until we chat again, be blessed! πŸ™‚
