Hot! Oh, so hot…

Sorry, this is not a sexy post.

But it is about being hot. In the literal sense, anyway…

Up to about a week or two ago, our summer has been wonderfully mild and enjoyable. Now, suddenly, all hell has broken loose! The temps went overnight!

Temps for the coming 2 weeks.

See? And we had two days in the past week of 40°C temps!!! To me, that is not a temperature that humans can live in. Lizards maybe. Or snakes. But definitely not human beings.

How to keep cool? And keep your cool? I find it very hard to cope, and I get extremely grumpy and lethargic. Useless. We do not have an aircon, but we do have a very old house with thick walls, so it is generally quite a bit cooler inside than out. So, of course, I try and stay inside as much as possible.

I take cold showers before going to bed. Or at least cool showers – juuuuuuuust enough warm water to take the worst of the sting out of the cold water. And that helps to feel more comfortable when going to bed.

I also have a fan. Not the kind that asks to have your picture taken with them, but the boring, ordinary kind that stirs the hot air to try and cool you down. It is constantly on whenever I’m in the lounge, trying to come to terms with the fact that it is summer, and that summer goes with high temps in this area.

The fact that I enjoy cooking and baking is forgotten as temperatures soar. I don’t even want to think about eating food, much less cook it! If I have to plan anything for dinner right now (it is 4 pm here, so getting closer to the time to make a decision), something like tuna salad comes to mind.

One good thing about being this hot, is that I do drink a lot more water. I do often flavour it with Oros, to be honest, but still, a lot more fluids than normal. (Oros is an orange flavoured squash (drink) mixed with water.) Not much else positive that I can think of…

So, I am now living for the end of February, when it should at last start cooling down for winter. I can not wait!!!

Best Friday in a while… :D

Travel time – not for me, but my youngest is just about on his way home for a visit! Photo by Alex Azabache on Pexels.com

Summer is here. Sigh….

I am thankful for the seasons, it makes life interesting and colourful. No, really, I am! It’s just that I suffer in temperatures over 30. (degrees Celsius, that is) And around here it is very frequently close to 40. For months on end.

It is also Friday. Another thing to be thankful for. And not only because it is weekend, there is a much bigger reason I am excited about Friday this week – my youngest is leaving Ireland today for a 3 week holiday here in South Africa!! I haven’t seen him for a year, so how great is that! Next week is going to be a family week, and I’m going to do some baking this weekend, typically mom-style! Some rusks and a date loaf to take with to my eldest son’s place, where we will all be together. I’m chuffed as can be. 😀

I’ve planted some tomatoes earlier this week, now I cannot wait for it to start growing. I think I’ll also do some celery. And maybe a few carrots. And green peppers.

While waiting for the veggies to grow, I’ll try and neaten up the rest of the garden, and add a few decorating touches to make it prettier and more interesting. Typical Spring stuff. A home and a garden are never done, as far as I am concerned – there are always new ideas to try and changes to make by adding or taking away. Or am I the only one who feels that way?

Anyhoo…I wish you all a wonderful weekend! I have important things to do… 😀

Go where the sun doesn’t shine.

You know how some people in UK and other northern countries escape their winters by going to Spain?

Well I want to do the exact opposite. I want to flee from our summer to colder climes, somewhere where there are lots of snow, and I can wear coats and boots and scarves. (I can think of one place where I’d like to be right now, more than any other place on earth…) The temperature here at the moment is 39° C, and I for one do not find that very amusing – quite the opposite, in fact.

Since childhood I’ve had a low tolerance for heat, and that has never changed. I think the stork got confused when he had to deliver me, and dropped me off in the wrong spot, to be honest.

Fortunately my house is very old and has super thick walls, which helps the inside to stay cooler. Unfortunately if you stay inside to escape the heat, you still feel the heat, and I don’t have an AC.

So, today I am hiding from the heat – if you are looking for me, I’ll be over here, right in front of the fan, as far away from outside as I can get…
